Stay Curious

Each year I choose a word or a theme for the year. In 2019, it’s STAY CURIOUS. We’re almost 6 months into the year and I’ve fallen off the wagon many times. But that’s what cool about a theme or an intention, we get to re-sign, re-group and re-up our choices, and I’m doing just that! Anyone with me?

STAY CURIOUS allow me to:

  • Remember that there is so much I don’t know and perhaps even more that I make up to make sense of something I don’t understand, or to fit in my comfort zone. Every time I act like I know the answer without pondering further, I’ve shut down the possibility to see more, to learn and to grow.
  • Examine my thinking and beliefs. Do a fact vs. fiction assessment of my thoughts. Facts are simply that- uncontested actual events, words, etc. Fiction is what I make that mean about myself or how I see the world. There is always a place for me to choose a perspective that, as Brene Brown suggests, sets in motion a “hypothesis of generosity” (i.e. seeks out and chooses a perspective that assumes good intentions and generosity).
  • Look for opportunities to broaden my perspectives by changing my viewpoint and by inviting in the perspective of others. Of course, inherent in that is that I need to be willing to be wrong and let go of any need I might have to control things.
  • And finally, if I stay curious, I engage with others in conversation. I ask questions. I listen more than I speak. We all want to be heard and seen.

The benefit or my why ‘STAY CURIOUS” is it allows me to create deeper, truer and more authentic connections. Conversations with the intention of understanding another’s point of view, another’s heart is what creates connection and intimacy in relationships. I want that!

In my last blog I introduced the Points-Of-You games (The Coaching Game, Punctum and Faces). These games are brilliant in providing an arena not only to facilitate curiosity but also to really look at issues, decisions and ideas in an explorative and expanded way. I’m so excited about the possibilities and opportunities that become available through these games. Looking for a fresh way to approach an old issue? I invite you to COME PLAY CARDS with me. This is a new offering and during the summer I’m offering them at a discounted rate.

If you have an issue, challenge or idea that you feel stuck on or that you keep mulling over, Come Play Cards with me.

As always, both Carol and I are here to accompany, advocate and encourage you, Ready for coaching? Or ready for a refresh? Contact us!
